The Future of Electric Aviation: My Experience with the Pipistrel Velis Electro
Electric aviation is rapidly becoming a reality, and my experience flying the Pipistrel Velis Electro, a zero-emission aircraft from Slovenia, built by Pipistrel, provided a fascinating glimpse into the future of aviation. Moreover, I had the opportunity to interview Matthijs Collard, co-owner of E-Flight Academy, which further deepened my understanding of the immense potential of electric aviation.
The Pipistrel Velis Electro: An Overview
The Pipistrel Velis Electro is a state-of-the-art, electric-powered aircraft that combines innovation and efficiency. It features a 57.6 kW MTPOP electric motor and offers the following specifications:
- Cruise speed: 98 KCAS
- Maximum operating altitude: 12,000 feet
- Flight range: 50 minutes
- Useful load: 170 kg (376 lbs)
- Charging time: Approximately 2 hours
Notably, the Velis Electro charges just like a Tesla, offering a seamless and sustainable flying experience. This aircraft demonstrates the growing potential of electric propulsion in aviation.
Unique Features and Experiences
In addition to its impressive specs, the Velis Electro stands out in several unique ways. Unlike traditional aircraft, such as the DV20, it doesn’t require magnetos, a key switch, or a starter key. Instead, starting the aircraft is as simple as flipping a switch and pressing a button.
One particularly interesting feature I experienced was the engine cut-off when the throttle was in the idle position. Unlike conventional engines that continue running, this feature may feel strange at first but adds to the aircraft’s simplicity and efficiency.
A Silent and Powerful Flight
The checklist for the Velis Electro was minimal—there was almost nothing to check. After taxiing to runway 26, we took off with impressive acceleration. The speed was overwhelming, and I was immediately pressed firmly into my seat. Moreover, the climb rate was significantly higher than my DV20, and the flight was much quieter. All I could hear was the soft hum of the propeller, which made for a serene flying experience.
As someone who had never flown a high-wing aircraft, this flight was entirely new. We flew at around 200 feet over a low-flying area and even practiced some side slips, which turned out to be quite enjoyable. Fortunately, landing the Velis Electro felt very similar to landing my DV20, which made the entire experience even more reassuring.
The Potential of Electric Aviation
The Velis Electro is just the beginning, however. Although its 50-minute range may be limited, it is perfect for short flights. In fact, the potential to significantly reduce emissions and lower noise pollution is within reach. During my interview with Matthijs Collard, he shared that most of their energy comes from the sun. The E-Flight Academy has installed a large solar panel farm on the roof of their facility, storing energy in a massive battery just outside the academy. This renewable energy system makes their operations even more sustainable.
Conclusion: A Game Changer in Aviation
In conclusion, flying the Pipistrel Velis Electro was an unforgettable experience. With its quiet, simple, and eco-friendly design, the Velis Electro is truly a “game changer” for the aviation industry. I am excited to see how electric planes continue to evolve and revolutionize the skies in the years to come.
